Well, for the past 7 years I have been a special education teacher and since coming here I found out that I will be starting a new position as a Literacy Support Specialist (LSS). I am so excited about this opportunity! I will be taking students in regular education who have been performing below grade level in reading and working in small groups with them to raise their reading levels. I am learning a new program call READ 180 to work with a group of about 16 students in the afternoon, and the program seems to be pretty beneficial. The READ 180 program has 20 minutes of whole group instruction, then 3 rotations of 20 minutes at 3 different stations, and a final 10 minutes of whole group wrap-up. The students spend 20 minutes in small group instruction with me, 20 minutes at a computer station, and 20 minutes of independent reading. I also have about 12 students in the morning who I pull out to have small group intervention. I have spent the first two weeks of school assessing students, reading their files, and contacting parents. The facilities here are pretty amazing...since I am working in the biggest DODDS (Department of Defense) school in the system. We serve about 1250 students Pre-K through 5th grade. I am really excited that I get to teach from a different perspective now. I am a regular education teacher-small group specialist...which gives me a new view of the system and helps me to understand the difficulties of scheduling in the school system. I have included a few pictures of my classroom...which is amazing. Don't judge the bare walls...I haven't gotten my shipment of school materials yet. I have a Smartboard, 6 student computers, my teacher computer, a laptop, 2 small couches, 3 comfy chairs and an LCD. I can't wait to use the technology to advance student learning!
