Some friends and I discovered that the Japanese are well-known for their convections, mainly because of the Indian and European influences here. So, we decided that one time a week (usually on Sundays) we have "Bakery Day" where we try new things at the local bakeries. It has turned out to be a good way to stay connected and to try new things together. There have even been envious folks who join our group just to partake in bakery day!
Here I am eating a delicious crepe filled with cream, banana, and chocolate drizzle. Mmmmmm!
The pastry on the left is a sweet bun with cream and sweet bean paste filling. The beans look like kidney beans, but are sweeter. The Japanese (and Hawaiians) use them in desserts, which are surprisingly tasty! The one in the middle is a Mochi dessert filled with mango cream. Again, I had something like this in Hawaii, but this is much better than any mochi I had there...sorry Nan. Mochi is a rice flour paste made when grains of rice are beaten...it's sort of chewy and tasteless until you flavor it with fruit or other things too. The one on the right is just a pastry with almond cream in the middle...also delicious!
Makes you want to join us on Bakery Day huh?
